Every year the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), organizations part of the United States Department of Homeland Security, holds the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) campaign to raise awareness of the importance of securing data and information online. For 2019, the overarching message is – Own It. Secure It. Protect It. – relating to consumer privacy, consumer devices, and ecommerce security.

As a NCSAM Champion organization and a managed security services provider, focused on cyber security and risk management, Secuvant will be supporting NCSAM messages in promoting online safety and enhancing awareness of cyber risk in the workplace. Resources such as the NCSAM 2019 Tool Kit, offers organizations a guide to promote and raise awareness of cybersecurity in the workplace and at home.

Each key message below addresses specific challenges and identifies opportunities for behavioral change.

  • Own It: Understand the devices and applications that you use everyday and the information you share across devices. Establishing privacy settings, best practices for social media, and policies around BYOD will help protect your information.
  • Secure It: There can never be too much security when protecting your data from cybercriminals. Implementing additional layers of security such as multi-factor authentication and training employees on anti-phishing practices will help protect against cyber threats.
  • Protect It: Ensuring you are staying current on security features and software updates will help maintain the protection across your accounts, devices, and environments.

“Every one of us has a seemingly ever-expanding digital footprint – across a range of devices and accounts, at home, at work, or at school and locking down that footprint is a never-ending job,” said Christopher Krebs, CISA Director. “The consequences of not getting security right go well beyond just having to get a replacement credit card. The decisions we make online can have local, regional and even global implications. It shouldn’t be this hard, but it’s also not hopeless – with this National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we’re aiming to focus on a handful of simple steps we can all take to raise our collective security to the next level and make the bad guys’ jobs that much harder.”
